Keynote Title: WHEN HERBAL TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE LEADS MEDICAL SCIENCE

BIO:

Prof. Datin Dr. MARYATI MOHAMED graduated with a BSc (Biology) from Universitas Gadjah Mada and a PhD (Entomology) from University of London, UK. She had worked in three Universities: Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (Bangi  and Sabah Campus), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (Sabah) and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (Johor). Her interest on traditional knowledge (TK) grew in Sabah, and she researched TK of the various ethnics such as Orang Sungai, Dusun, Tidong and Bisayah, especially on the use of plants and animals in health care. Her concern is basically in rapid documentation of TK, as one of her research with a Japanese student showed that there is loss of TK along generations. Back in Johor, Prof. Maryati and her students ventured into documenting TK of the Jakun as medicinal plants (diseases such as TB and malaria) as well as for healthcare including as food sources. She had supervised 56 MScs and 8 studied on TK. Her PhD students numbered 21 (15 Malaysian, 6 international students) and 4 of them dealt with TK. She is of the opinion that documenting of TK is critical to make possible further research and it has to be done fast as the rate of TK loss through time is fast. She was also the principle consultant for the preparation of the Malaysian Ministry of Health’s portal Globin-Med on Biodiversity and TK working closely with the Institute for Medical Research, Malaysia. Her publication (refereed journals, proceeding etc >150) covers a wide topics, some 30 were on TK. She had translated a text book written by Gary Martin on Ethnobotany.  Although by training she is not an ethnographist neither a plant chemist, her passion had led Prof.  Maryati to be instrumental in ensuring research and the process of documentation of TK go on among the younger generation, including being vocal on issues of PIC and ABS.
